With fire rated glazing you cannot deviate away from the test evidence and what has been certified. It is imperative that the fire rating classifications are paid strict attention to as this is the test evidence that demonstrates the ability of each system. An out-of-control fire can destroy buildings and put lives at risk – which makes fire rated glass a great solution both inside and outside a building.
Heated Glass
With its unparalleled strength and impact resistance, tempered safety glass has become a favoured choice for installers and building owners, elevating the standards of both safety and efficiency. Class EW (Integrity & Radiation) rating is also a measure of Integrity performance (E) with the addition of the ability to minimize radiant heat transfer from the fire side to the unexposed side. By reducing the amount of energy passing through its surface, EW-classified fire-resistant glass can provide enhanced protection against the spread of fire and create safer evacuation passages.
Laser Safety Glass
- PYRANOVA® is a clear, laminated composite glass that offers outstanding levels of fire resistance thanks to a combination of thin glass panes and internal layers.
- Many building regulations require the installation of fire rated glass as in the event of an emergency it helps the occupants of a building to escape safely and helps to prevent the fire spreading from one building to another.
- Meanwhile, high light transmission along with excellent color reproduction mean that security can still be combined with attractive aesthetics.
- Integrity (Measured in Minutes) defines how long the glass will give structural resistance in relation to the application and passage of flame and smoke to the glass.
- The investor can not therefore demand a supplier to submit a document classifying a glass pane with respect to its fire-resistant properties.
Doors and side panels must be class 2 if the width is greater than 900mm, and class 3 if the width is more than 250mm and less than 900mm. If panes are of a thickness greater than 6mm, with a width less than 250mm and area less than 0.5m2, an impact-rated glass is not required. – E Classification – Integrity only – E classification stops the progress of flame and smoke but does not prevent the transmission of radiant heat in the event of a fire. Protection levels are measured in defined time periods (30, 60, 90, 120 and 180 minutes) and in terms of either integrity and insulation or integrity only, as designated by the European Standards.
The two types of fire rated glass are fire-protective and fire-resistive. Fire-protective glass acts as a barrier against flames and smoke, typically used in interior applications. Fire-resistive glass, which includes products like our FireLite® Glass, offers a higher level of protection by also blocking heat transfer, making it suitable for more demanding applications where additional protection is required.
The EI classification is the highest of the fire-resistant glass classifications. When exposed to a fire, it prevents flames and hot gases from penetrating through, and also maintains the average temperature of the unexposed face to below 140°C. This must be specified for certain areas of buildings, according to Approved Document B of the Building Regulations, which covers fire safety (see below).

Fire-resistant glass can be used indoors or outdoors, as long as it is installed by a specialist and in line with manufacturer specifications. Unlike the more traditional forms of wired fire-rated glass – which we also supply – our fire-rated laminated glass has the general appearance of plain glass, but is thicker. This adds an aesthetic benefit and means that it can be used for a variety of purposes.
TRUDOOR® is certified by UL to cut, re-certify, and label PYRAN® Platinum F glass and fire-protection-rated glazing materials. Using fire rated glass doors is a great way of achieving a sleek appearance while also ensuring fire safety. Osborn supplies 30-minute fire-rated glass to clients across South and Central London, cut to size for your bespoke needs.
Layered fire resistant glass consists of 2 glass panels that have been laminated to each other. With over 130 years of experience, SCHOTT is a leading international technology group in the areas of specialty glass, glass-ceramics, and related fire rated glass cut to size high-tech materials. SCHOTT AG has its headquarters in Mainz (Germany) and is solely owned by the Carl Zeiss Foundation. As a foundation company, SCHOTT assumes special responsibility for its employees, society, and the environment. Fire resistive doors, windows/openings and wall assemblies for prisons and other high security areas. Allows for large, multi-story expanses of glass in interior and exterior applications using narrow steel profiles.

The first (and only) floated fire-protective glass-ceramic, environmentally-friendly SCHOTT PYRAN® Platinum by McGrory Glass offers the largest sheet sizes in the industry – 51 x 99 inches – with a neutral gray tone (no amber tint).
FireLite Plus is a 5/16” (8 mm) thick laminated fire-rated and impact safety-rated glazing material. The term “fire-rated glass” refers to the complete set of fire-rated glazing products available in the market. Within that wide category, designers can choose from both “fire-protective” and “fire-resistive” glazing products, depending on their project’s requirements. It is used in building doors and windows and can help keep flames and smoke from spreading from one room to another. It is the building owner’s responsibility to ensure that fire glass is installed wherever it is required by law, to the minimum specifications that these legal standards require. It’s therefore important to consult local and national regulations for building safety and fire safety when designing and installing elements involving glass and fire resistance.
All wired products have sharp edges and must be handled with more care than all other types of Fire Glass, which feature foil taped edges. Insulation (Measured in Minutes) defines the resistance to the passage of heat through the glass. Whether it is fitting a mirror in your home or replacing the glazing units from a high-rise window, we can do it all. Please note if you have selected that you require glass gasket, you will receive enough to go around the piece of glass you have ordered. We bring steel, aluminum, timber and glass into creative harmony in an architectural context, aesthetically exceptional and functionally convincing Fire-Rated Glass that is processed locally and delivered at your convenience.
From greenhouse glass to fire rated glass for both domestic and commercial use – we have it all. In most cases this should mean you are able to pick it up immediately after it has been cut, though the turnaround time is dependent on our daily schedule. If you need structural glazing for a bigger construction project, our toughened glass can be cut to specific measurements depending on your requirements.
